PROJECTS
The following is a list of EMC projects currently being undertaken, or recently completed:-

-
EMI study for a new residential/commercial building (immediate right) having cellular telephone base stations on its roof. Subsequent design of "Architectural" electromagnetic screening integrated into the building to ensure residents living on the upper floor of the building are not exposed to unacceptable EMF levels. Provision of a detailed specification for the screening. The implementation of regular quality assurance inspections whilst a contractor installed the electromagnetic screening. Upon completion of the works and whilst base stations were operating, EMF reception measurements were carried out within the building to prove that EMF levels were acceptably low and were well within UK/European health & safety requirements. Final stage of the project was the issue of all test and acceptance documentation.
- Sub station electromagnetic screening - A prestigious residential development within central London had to incorporate an electrical sub station into the building due to lack of available space elsewhere. In order to ensure negligible risk to residents, and to maximise the perceived value of the development, EMC Consultants were commissioned to carry out a design study to determine worst case EMF levels within residential areas. Results were compared to UK / European acceptable limits for people and were also compared to health studies linking leukaemia in children to EMF exposure. An electromagnetic screening specification was then developed for the sub station and quotations for supply / installation were obtained from specialist screening contractors. EMC Consultants provided QA inspections during the period of the screening / shielding installation. Once the the building was occupied and the sub station was delivering normal load, EMF measurements were carried out within residences surrounding the sub station to confirm that ambient EMF levels were satisfactorily low. Upon completion of the survey works, formal test and acceptance documentation was issued to the developer.
- Responsibility for all EMC consultancy aspects of the BBC W1 redevelopment of Broadcasting House in London. Phase 1 of the project included a complete analysis of the EMI that is likely to be produced by all building power systems. This lead to some power system redesign in order to control EMI within such areas as radio and TV studios. Where electrical redesign was not possible or not cost effective, electromagnetic screening, filtering and other EMC measures were incorporated into sensitive areas of the various buildings. Prior to, and upon completion of all works, a site wide EMF survey was carried out to confirm that ambient EMF's and EMI levels were sufficiently low to ensure the health and safety of people and the reliable operation of electronic equipment.
- Telecommunications environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a major redevelopment in Southampton. The project comprises many new multi-storey buildings in the vicinity of extensive two storey housing estates. The purpose of the assessment being to quantify the risk of interference to television and radio reception in the Southampton area in general and local housing in particular. The study considered the location of the main television and radio transmitters serving the area and, by the principle of ray tracing determined the locations/extent of electromagnetic shadow and reflection zones. Where TV or radio reception was likely to be affected by the presence of the development, all possible options for reinstatement of reception were provided.
- EMI survey for a new building very close to a railway station having extensive electrification. Survey results showed likely EMI problems within the building which is owned by a 'Blue Chip' insurance company. EMC Consultants provided all services related to optimisation (minimising the extent of necessary protection measures) and integration of electromagnetic screening into the building. The company Provided detailed specifications and regular quality assurance monitoring whilst a specialist contractor installed the electromagnetic screening and specialist glazing. Upon completion of the project, measurements were carried out within the building to prove EMI levels were below the threshold of electronic equipment susceptibility. Full test and acceptance documentation was provided.
- EMF survey of high voltage overhead lines passing across a significant future residential development in the south of England. The same project involved calculation of EMF from a buried alternative to overhead lines. This combination of works enabled determination of the reduced safe distance for the location of housing (and elimination of unsightly overhead lines).
- EMC consultant / consultancy for many electromagnetic field environmental studies and EMC surveys.
- Electromagnetic Interference and health studies for various clients.
- Sub station EMF screening/EMI shielding projects
- Analysis and study of proposed electrical distribution systems to prevent interference with IT and communications equipment.
- Television interference study for proposed high rise building (now an environmental planning requirement)
- Telecommunications environmental impact assessments (EIA) and baseline surveys for extensive redevelopments in Portsmouth and Southampton.
- Radar protection of BAe data processing headquarters.
- Consultant to BT for protection of an automatic telephone exchange from radar EMI at a major airport.
- EMC design of a research laboratory for British Petroleum.
- EMC design for the protection of Electron Microscopes and similar equipment for various clients.
- Correction of numerous EMC related building power system and electrical distribution faults.
- Analysis, design, quality assurance and acceptance testing of asymmetrical low frequency magnetic shielding.
- Radio frequency detection of surveillance devices and directed physical search of directors offices for large PLC.
